Solo TTRPGs, or Solo Tabletop Roleplaying Games, require a gamer to play by themself using a preplanned module and their choice of writing utensil(s). Games are either modified to fit the needs and limitations of only one player (such as D&D, Vampire: The Masquerade, or Brindlewood Bay) or specifically created to be enjoyed by yourself (e.g., Thousand Year Old Vampire, The Wretched, Apothecaria/Apawthecaria).

This community was created to share play-throughs and reviews, ask questions and make recommendations. If you love solo ttrpgs, we’d love to chat with you about it here!

FAQ

Q: I’ve never tried to play an RPG by myself before. Where can I dip my toes into this “solo RPG” thing?

There are over 50 titles (possibly more like 100) listed on the r/Solo_Roleplaying reddit board. You can check out the list here.

Q: How do I make well-rounded characters that are fun to play?

I really love using Peril Planet’s Freeform Universal RPG (Classic) to create characters with realistic gifts and flaws, ones that are unable to “godmode.” Others may have other systems they use, so check the comments for more systems.

Q: How do I decide whether I “hit” or “miss” during gameplay?

Peril Planet’s Freeform Universal RPG (Classic) uses a six-sided die to determine the outcome of any action during your gameplay, where:

  1. No, and...: Something worse than what you hoped for happens.
  2. Yes, but...: What you were aiming to do happens, but with a twist (e.g., your character rolls their ankle, someone catches you).
  3. No...: Your roll fails with no negative or positive reaction.
  4. Yes...:Your roll succeeds with no negative or positive reaction.
  5. No, but...: Your roll fails, but another positive avenue opens up for exploration.
  6. Yes, and...: Not only do you succeed, but you do so beyond your wildest dreams.

Q: How do I organize my playthrough notes?

The Valley Standard offers a great, free guide to formatting play sessions. You can add or subtract from this style until you have a format you love. Others may have systems they prefer, so be sure to check through the playthroughs to see other options!

Q: I’d like to convert one of my favorite group RPGs. Do you have any suggestions?

While I, the admin, haven’t tried to retrofit a major RPG (yet!), I know that Parts Per Million have created solo rules for a lot of very popular titles. You might also find rules for your games on Google. Folks in this community may have recommendations, too, so don’t hesitate to post your recc’s below or make requests via post in the forum!
